The Electric Hoax first appeared in the UK music newspaper, Sounds and ran for 23 weekly episodes throughout 1978. Co-created with friend, Peter Millgan this was Brendan's first professional comic work and also the first published outing from the Milligan/McCarthy team.

Brendan McCarthy:
"When I left art college, I had to make a living, once cut off from the bosom of never-ending grants, and after spending one month on the dole, and putting up with complete and utter humiliation by the nazis at the DHSS. I figured that if I couldn't earn £20.00 a week, I must be a complete moron. I knew I had talent, and, after a variety of odd jobs (some extremely odd jobsl) I managed to sell a punk-inspired strip to Sounds music paper called the Electric Hoax which was my first paying job. l actually got money (not a lot of it, sure) for doing some art and figured, this is for me! I wrote and drew Electric Hoax for about 8 months while at the same time harassing the people at 2000 AD for some work, and eventually got a start with the inevitable Future Shocks. The less said the better.

As Electric Hoax was progressing along, I found the writing of it was taking me nearly as long as the drawing so I asked my good friend Peter Milligan to take over the scripting and thus the famous partnership was born. I met Pete through Brett Ewins, because they were at another art college together, Goldsmiths in South London if I'm not mistaken. Electric Hoax finally came to an end, and a certain Mr Alan Moore jumped into the slot with his first published stuff. He nobly upheld the tradition of baffling the hell out of the editorial staff at Sounds."
